As children we can all remember getting up on Saturday mornings to watch our favorite cartoons. When I was young we had a plethora of cartoons to choose from and Saturday was pretty much the only day you got to watch them.

Widely considered the first successful primetime cartoon, The Flintstones aired from 1960 to 1966 and has had reruns aired ever since. The actual first animated cartoon was Fantasmagorie, all the way back in 1908, but it used hand drawn animation and was before television. Betty Boop started airing in 1932.

Over the years cartoons have taken on a whole new direction. The kids have their cartoons, teens have theirs, and now there are a bunch of adult themed cartoons. I’m not a huge fan of them but I know many people watch them religiously.

With the adult cartoons it gave the gambling world an in to base slot games off these shows that are hugely popular and can draw large amounts of players to the casinos to give these games a try. The games I’ve chosen for this post include most of the popular cartoons for adults; some are enjoyed by both children and adults. I even went way back to find some great games with cartoons we all know and love.

Let’s jump in and see if these games can live up to their namesakes and pull in the players like the casinos and designers are hoping for.

1. Family Guy Slot Machine

Game Information

Family Guy came from one of comedies made popular by entertainer Seth McFarlane. He’s well known for his stint on Saturday Night Live and now for taking over for Jimmy Falon on the Late Show. The show is famous for the man child Stewie, who sees the world as a horrible place. Through it all though the main character Peter must try to make everyone in his family happy, which at times leads to hilariously funny twists and turns before it all turns out ok.

IGT is the developer for this game and as with many of their games they’ve provided us with a game full of astounding graphics and of course great bonuses and jackpots for us to strive to win. Family guy comes with so many special features it’s hard to walk away from.

The game is set up a little different than many of the others I’ve seen by this designer. The game is a 3 x 5 reel setup but the pay lines are combined with the features. The game has 30 pay lines plus features and it requires you to use 50 coins on each spin. Basically, this means you have 50 pay lines because your wager is multiplied by the 50 coins to get your total bet.

The betting range for this game is a little on the high side in my opinion. The minimum line bet you can place is $1 and the max is set at $10. This makes your minimum total bet of $50 and the max a massive $500. For some people this might be a deal breaker, but for the high rollers out there this game is perfect.

The symbols in the game look as though they’ve come right from the television show. You have everyone in attendance as well with Peter and Lois being the highest paying of the regular symbols. Brain, Stewie, Chris and Meg follow, joined by a bottle, TV, Teddy Bear, and a ray gun to round out the symbols.

The special features for the game include six progressive jackpots, bonus games, and of course a wild symbol. The wild symbol is the family guy logo. When it appears on the reels it subs for any other symbol except the bonus. The only time the wild doesn’t sub for the character symbols is during the Lois feature.

When you get three or more of the World Bonus symbols on the reels a globe pops up and when it stops spinning you’re sent to one of three great bonus games. These games include The Drunken Clam, Chicken Fight, and Lois’ Hot Free Spins.

In the Drunken Clam bonus you have a chance to win between 25 and 1000 as multipliers just by selecting characters. In the Chicken Fight Bonus you choose either Peter or the Chicken to be your fighter. You have three rounds to rack up as many multipliers as possible. Lois’ Hot Free Spin takes you to a whole new set of reels centered on Lois and you get an initial 10 free spins with a chance to continue on by triggering more. In this round you have a chance of winning up to 500 times your wager.

The game has a feature for each of the main characters of the show where you can get multipliers added to your wins, receive extra wilds, or trigger the bonus rounds immediately. With all these features this game is well worth the higher betting requirements.

Although I know very little about the show, since I‘ve never watched a single episode, I have to say this game is rather entertaining and I’m sure is a money maker for the casinos and the designers. If you’re a fan of the show I guarantee you’re going to love this game.

2. South Park Slot Machine

Game Information

Slot Machine Cartoon

South Park is an extremely popular cartoon with a main audience that ranges in age from 13 to 35. This huge age gap has enabled the show to survive for over 15 years. Although now it doesn’t have any new shows coming out, all of the old ones are still watched regularly.

The show is known for its violent and offensive nature with characters that are constantly cussing, degrading, or even violently attacking each other. This show was one of those shows that parents hated and kids loved and now those kids have grown up and introduced their children to the four heathens the show is centered around.

The game has 5 reels and 25 pay lines for you to play on. The betting range for the game is set up to allow anyone who wants to play the chance to play. With the minimum line bet of .01 and the max set at .50, anyone can play this game no matter what their budget.

The games symbols include all the boys Kenny, Cartman, Stan, and Kyle along with many other symbols from the show to increase the experience of the game. You have a chance to trigger multiple special features based on the boys themselves.

Drawing

The game comes with some animated missions which is a new aspect I haven’t ever seen before. These missions include Cartman throwing fire extinguishers at hippies, Kenny dodging airplanes to collect multipliers, Beating Kyle’s Brother Ike at Hopscotch, and Puking on Wendy Stan’s girlfriend.

The game also has randomly appearing special features with Cartman’s mini game. The game is a 3 x 3 reel set up covered in wild symbols. This feature takes over the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th reels and gives you a chance to make many winning combinations with each spin.

Mr. Hankey also has a special feature where he turns symbols into wilds when he appears on the reels. Terrance and Philip make an appearance too; when they pop up on the reels they bring with them three wilds that you can use to make even more winning combinations.

The game has a couple bonus features. In Kyle’s bonus feature you get 10 free spins to start with and as you play you can earn even more. The Kenny Bonus game requires you to help Kenny navigate the streets of South Park. As you do this you collect cash prizes and multipliers as long as you keep Kenny safe.

South Park slot is an easy to play game that comes with some of the most amazing features. I rarely see a game that has so many side games you can trigger and with a chance at winning up to 1.25 million dollars this game is a must play.

3. Pink Panther Slot Game

Game Information

Let’s travel back in time a little bit and visit the mid-1960’s when the Pink Panther was first introduced to the world. This cartoon was so successful it ran from 1964 until 1980 and has spawned successful movies multiple times. That’s why I wasn’t surprised to see that Playtech had chosen to use this famous cat for a slot machine.

The game is a 5 reel game and has 50 pay lines. With betting denominations ranging from .01 per line and up to $2 per line this gives you all the options you could ask for. You play the game with credits and you can choose to play up to 10 credits with each spin giving you a max bet of $800 per spin.

The graphics used in the game go back to the original cartoon with vintage Pink Panther, Little Man, Inspector Clouseau, bombs, pink paint, and of course pink paw prints. The regular symbols are rounded out with the customary poker symbols nine thru Ace.

The Pink Panther symbol acts as the wild for the game. When he appears on the reels get ready to make some winning combinations since he subs for any symbol on the reels except the scatter symbol. The wild also has a huge pay out available when it lands multiple times on a pay line. When this symbol lands on a pay line two or more times you stand the chance of winning between 15 times and 5,000 times your pay line bet.

The game logo is the scatter symbol. When it appears on the reels three or more times it pays you multipliers that range from five times to 125 times your line bet. The bonus features for the game are randomly triggered and can reveal any one of five possible games.

The Pink Pow Bonus gives you the opportunity to blow up between two and six different symbols on the reels to turn them into wilds to help increase your winning combinations. Then you have the Crack the Pink Code Bonus which gives you 10 safes. You click on the safes and start winning each safe has a different prize and the game continues until you get a stick of dynamite in the safe.

Wheel of Pink Bonus is like a Wheel of Fortune game. You spin two separate wheels. The outside wheel offers cash prizes while the inside reel gives you a chance to re spin. You continue spinning until the inside wheel lands on a collect option and this adds up your total wins and takes you back to the regular game.

The Color Pink Bonus has Little Man in front of a wall of numbers you can accept the numbers or you have two chances to have him repaint the numbers in hopes of getting hire ones. The last feature for the game is the Pink Trail feature. This one has Inspector Clouseau hunting down the panther diamond with you being his guide. Choose his steps to get him to the diamond and win a prize.

This game is great even though it’s based on an older cartoon. It has enough great features to make it worth your time and money.

4. The Flintstones Slot Machine

Game Information

One of the most recognizable cartoons of all time is the Flintstones. The game has Barney, Wilma, and Fred serving as the main characters. This cartoon took us back to the Stone Age where you drove a foot powered car and had a dinosaur for a pet. This cartoon is still popular and has even been the basis for a couple big movie adaptations.

The game is a 5 x 3 grid game set up and doesn’t have pay lines available to choose from. Instead the game boasts of 1024 different ways to win. This number is astonishing and makes you want to try your luck with the bedrock crew.

The symbols for the game include Barney, Wilma, Fred, Betty, Dino, shell phone, and poker symbols to round out the symbols list. These symbols have pay outs ranging from five times your line bet and up to 400 times for a maximum win.

The game comes with five different bonus features and each of these features gives you a chance to get some big money wins. The best of the five in my opinion is the Flintstones Rocky Ride. In this feature Fred and Barney roll in in the infamous foot powered car to allow you to spin the wheel at the top of the reels where you can win mystery symbols, cash prizes and multipliers. A second wheel reveals the mystery symbol hidden prizes.

Second you have the Bedrock Bowling bonus. It’s triggered when you get three or more of the bowling bonus symbols. You get to choose Fred’s bowling style and let him bowl away to win you cash prizes and multipliers.

The Great Gonzo is the free spins feature. When this is triggered you have a chance at getting up to 12 free spins. During the free spins Gonzo replaces Dino as the wild and randomly changes other symbols into wilds when he appears on the reels.

Dino has his own game where he digs for bones to reveal prizes. Wilma also has her own feature and awards you with five free spins. During her free spins any wilds that land on the reels are swept up and on the last spin of your feature they all reappear to award you with a massive pay out.

This game is just as much fun to play as it is to watch these iconic characters in the show. I really enjoyed the game with its wonderful graphics and multiple special features.

5. American Dad Slot Machine

Game Information

American Dad is another adult themed cartoon from Fox that’s become a must see on Sunday nights. The game is set up to resemble the show with an American Flag as the back drop for the game and the characters all appearing on the reels. The sound track used for the game is even right out of the show; it’s almost like you’re watching an episode of the show while you’re playing.

The game is a 5 reel game with game play across 40 pay lines. The betting options for the game are pretty decent. They range from as little as .01 per line to $5 per pay line. This gives total bets per spin in the amounts of 40 cents up to $200.00 for the max.

When you check out the pay table you see all the familiar characters from the show. You have Stan, Francine, Hayley, Klaus, and Steve, joined by a few other classic symbols. The top paying symbol in the game has the ability to pay out a max of 250 times your line bet.

American Dad has many different special features. One of those features is common in most slot games and that’s the wild. For this game Roger the Alien takes the helm as the wild symbol. He can replace any other symbol on the reels. The wild has its own multipliers when it completes winning combinations which can give you a chance at triggering a 750 time multiplier when Roger is involved.

The symbol that has the potential to get you the most bonus game time is the Schmooblydong Wheel. This symbol on appears on reels 1, 3, and 5. When it appears the symbol on reel one it determines which character bonus you’ll be playing, the symbol on reel three determines how many rounds you get in the game, and the wheel on reel five can give you a chance at getting 25 free spins to go on top of the bonus trigger.

Stan can become a stacked wild in his feature. Roger has another feature where he pukes all over the screen and randomly changes symbols to wilds to make more winning combinations.

Francine’s Holy Grail is another feature where your goal is to help Klaus get to Francine’s Holy Grail. On this set of reels the fish becomes a patch that can appear randomly and if Francine lands on the reel with a fish patch she becomes an expanding wild.

Any time a feature is triggered Hayley starts collecting signatures and with every signature she gets you have a chance to increase your win multiplier. Also during the feature spins the Wheel and Legman symbol race across the screen leaving wilds in their wake to increase wins in features as well.

This show is a little too much for me so it’s not on my usual to watch list. The game on the other hand is rather fun and gives great pay out opportunities so even if you’re not a fan of the show this game is still a great one to try out the next time you play.

6. Betty Boop Slot Machine

Game Information

Probably the most iconic cartoon woman of all time, it’s only right Betty Boop should have her own slot machine. Her cartoon series started way back in 1932 and to this day this lovely lady has a hoard of devoted fans. With her huge fan base it’s no wonder that this slot is one of the most popular machines in the world.

Cartoon Slot Machine Images

The game is a 5 reel game with 40 available pay lines. The betting options for the game range from .01 to $7.50 per line. This gives you a minimum bet of 40 cents per spin and a max bet of $300 per pin.

The game comes with three different progressive features and various bonus features to make sure you have a great opportunity to win great prizes. The game comes with a massive ultimate pay out of $1 million dollars as well. These kinds of features are sure to grab your attention and get you playing the game.

The special features are what set this game apart from the others on the casino floor. These features range from free spins, cash prizes and multipliers to increase the amount you get to walk away with.

Free printable slot machine pictures

The Love Meter is one of those games and it triggers free spins. You can win between one and 15 free spins, and if you’re lucky and trigger the higher amount of spins you get multipliers that come along with them and give you the potential to make big money during this feature.

Betty’s Heart is another feature of the game where you choose one of three lockers to find the one to Betty’s Heart. This feature can reward you with a credit for every pick you make or if you’re lucky you might get a credit that comes with an extra pick for you to use.

How Hot Are You is where you can win big money. In this game you find out just how hot Betty thinks you are. You can be romantic, lovable, wild, sexy, mischievous, smoking, burning, or passionate. Wonder which one you fall under just play the game and let Betty tell you.

Light Up Betty’s Life is the last feature and it gives you a grid of six light bulbs. Your goal is to get all the light bulbs to turn on. Each one you get on moves the amp meter and when the game is over Betty awards you credits based on your meter.

This game is perfect for this iconic lady. It keeps her at the forefront of the game and reminds everyone why she is one of the most popular cartoon characters of all time. The graphics in the game are nice and clean and all relate well to the theme. Add in the great base game and special feature combinations and this game is one of the best I’ve seen.

7. The Simpsons Slot Machine

Game Information

The Simpsons is going to go down in history as the most successful cartoon ever produced; I’m sure of it. I doubt there’s a single person who hasn’t seen at least one episode of this amazing show. The Simpsons has been on the air on Fox for going on 30 years. This is an incredible feat that even most regular television shows can’t reach.

The game is a slot machine that can only be found in land based casinos at the present time. The console for the game is massive and can be found in groups all over the casinos in all the major gambling cities. This game has such a draw just by the way it looks that more than likely you’re going to have to wait your turn to get a chance to play.

The symbols for the game include all the major character from the show and include essentials like Duff beer and Homer’s pink sprinkled doughnuts to round out the symbols. The game has wilds that can change with each spin and trigger random bonuses such as Itchy and Scratchy or Marge.

As you play you may notice that the atmosphere changes. You can be at the power plant with Homer one minute and the next you can be at the Kwik-E Mart with Apu. This is great for fans of the show as you get to experience all the great places that you see in the show.

The bonus features can be triggered by the pink doughnuts. When you get three or more of these on the reels you trigger some free spins. If you manage to land them on the corners you get to spin the doughnut bonus wheel. You also get to play as Homer and try and catch the floating sprinkles as they fall from the sky.

The other bonus feature takes you to Moe’s tavern where you choose which catch phrase you want Bart to use when he’s trying out his latest prank. When Bart uses the catch phrase during his prank call you receive cash prizes. You can also trigger an instant pick bonus which you scratch to reveal your prize.

The Simpson’s has made TV history and I’m sure that it isn’t going to be changing any time soon. That’s why this game remains one of the most popular games in the world. Everyone loves the Simpson’s; this is clear by its long run on television and after you play this game if you weren’t a fan before I’m sure you will be after.

Conclusion

Cartoons are always going to be a part of life. For kids there might not be as much to choose from but each year a new set of cartoons is released for the kids to enjoy. The best part about cartoons now is that they’ve been adapted to adults as well. It’s no longer uncool to watch a cartoon series if you’re over the age of eight. It’s almost a must in this day and age.

Since the early years cartoons have had huge fan bases which are clear with the way Betty Boop has managed to stay on top for all these years. I’m sure that this trend is going to continue and as it grows so is the need for more slot machines to be designed.

The slots that I’ve reviewed are some of the ones that I’ve found that really stay true to the show they’re designed after. Each one has many features from the show that include background images, sound track, and of course the symbol images.

I think it’s very important that if a game is going to bear the name of a television show that it be as close to the real thing as possible and this was achieved well with each of these seven games. I hope I’ve given you a couple games to look for online and on your next trip to the casino.

A Rube Goldberg machine, named after American cartoonist Rube Goldberg, is a machine intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overly complicated way. Usually, these machines consist of a series of simple unrelated devices; the action of each triggers the initiation of the next, eventually resulting in achieving a stated goal. In the United Kingdom, a similar contrivance is referred to as a 'Heath Robinson contraption' after cartoons by the illustrator W. Heath Robinson.

The design of such a 'machine' is often presented on paper and would be impossible to implement in actuality. More recently, such machines are being fully constructed for entertainment (for example, a breakfast scene in Peewee's Big Adventure) and in Rube Goldberg competitions.

Professor Butts and the Self-Operating Napkin (1931). Soup spoon (A) is raised to mouth, pulling string (B) and thereby jerking ladle (C), which throws cracker (D) past toucan (E). Toucan jumps after cracker and perch (F) tilts, upsetting seeds (G) into pail (H). Extra weight in pail pulls cord (I), which opens and ignites lighter (J), setting off skyrocket (K), which causes sickle (L) to cut string (M), allowing pendulum with attached napkin to swing back and forth, thereby wiping chin.

Over the years, the expression has expanded to mean any confusing or overly complicated system. For example, news headlines include 'Is Rep. Bill Thomas the Rube Goldberg of Legislative Reform?'[1] and 'Retirement 'insurance' as a Rube Goldberg machine'.[2]

Origin[edit]

Something for Nothing (1940), short film featuring Goldberg.

The expression is named after the American cartoonistRube Goldberg, whose cartoons often depicteddevices that performed simple tasks in indirect convoluted ways. The cartoon above is Goldberg's Professor Butts and the Self-Operating Napkin, which was later reprinted in a few book collections, including the postcard book Rube Goldberg's Inventions! and the hardcover Rube Goldberg: Inventions, both compiled by Maynard Frank Wolfe from the Rube Goldberg Archives.[3]

The term 'Rube Goldberg' was being used in print to describe elaborate contraptions by 1928,[4] and appeared in the Random House Dictionary of the English Language in 1966 meaning 'having a fantastically complicated improvised appearance', or 'deviously complex and impractical'.[5] Because Rube Goldberg machines are contraptions derived from tinkering with the tools close to hand, parallels have been drawn with evolutionary processes.[6]

Many of Goldberg's ideas were utilized in films and TV shows for the comedic effect of creating such rigmarole for such a simple task, such as the front gate mechanism in The Goonies and the breakfast machine shown in Pee-wee's Big Adventure. In Ernest Goes to Jail, Ernest P. Worrell uses his invention simply to turn his TV on. Wallace from Wallace and Gromit creates and uses many such machines for numerous tasks, though the inspiration is the British cartoonist W. Heath Robinson (see below)[7] Other films such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Diving into the Money Pit, and Back To The Future have featured Rube Goldberg–style devices as well.

Competitions[edit]

Rube Goldberg machine designers participating in a competition in New Mexico.

In early 1987, Purdue University in Indiana started the annual National Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, organized by the Phi chapter of Theta Tau, a national engineering fraternity. In 2009, the Epsilon chapter of Theta Tau established a similar annual contest at the University of California, Berkeley.

Since around 1997, the kinetic artistArthur Ganson has been the emcee of the annual 'Friday After Thanksgiving' (FAT) competition sponsored by the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Teams of contestants construct elaborate Rube Goldberg style chain-reaction machines on tables arranged around a large gymnasium. Each apparatus is linked by a string to its predecessor and successor machine. The initial string is ceremonially pulled, and the ensuing events are videotaped in closeup, and simultaneously projected on large screens for viewing by the live audience. After the entire cascade of events has finished, prizes are then awarded in various categories and age levels. Videos from several previous years' contests are viewable on the MIT Museum website.[8]

The Chain Reaction Contraption Contest[9] is an annual event hosted at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in which high school teams each build a Rube Goldberg machine to complete some simple task (which changes from year to year) in 20 steps or more (with some additional constraints on size, timing, safety, etc.).

On the TV show Food Network Challenge, competitors in 2011 were once required to create a Rube Goldberg machine out of sugar.[10]

An event called 'Mission Possible'[11] in the Science Olympiad involves students building a Rube Goldberg-like device to perform a certain series of tasks.

The Rube Goldberg company holds an annual Rube Goldberg machine contest.[12]
